Do You Have What It Takes to Start? (Spoiler: Yes, You Do!)
Starting a small business is like jumping into a cold pool on a hot summer day. It’s thrilling, nerve-wracking, and refreshingly bold. Most of us don’t have a shiny suitcase of cash or a 10-person dream team when we dive in. Let’s face it: many of us start with nothing more than big hearts, unwavering faith, and maybe one friend who’s good at Photoshop.
Take our business for example. Sonny has a knack for marketing (seriously, he could sell ice in Antarctica) and I’ve got the writing chops to tell our story. Did we have capital? Nope. A carefully curated business plan? Sort of. What we did have was a willingness to try and the kind of optimism that can only be described as “borderline delusional” (in the best way).
If that sounds like you, keep reading.
Do You Have What It Takes?
Here’s the secret: you don’t need perfection to start. You need passion, persistence, and a healthy dose of humor because things will go sideways. Maybe your first big event gets rained out, or your brilliant product idea doesn’t sell like you’d hoped. That’s okay. Everyone starts somewhere, and slow days are part of the ride.
What Do You Actually Need?
A Clear Goal
Know what you’re offering and why. Whether it’s handmade candles, dog grooming services, or a taco truck, your business should solve a problem or make someone’s day better.
A Basic Plan
You don’t need a 100-page PowerPoint presentation. Just figure out who your customers are, how you’ll reach them, and what makes you stand out.
Supportive Allies
Surround yourself with cheerleaders, mentors, and partners who believe in you. Maybe you’re the brains, and your bestie is the social media guru. Perfect! Teamwork makes the small business dreams work.
Faith (And Coffee) (Too Much Coffee)
You’ll need both, especially when things are slow. Use those quiet times to brainstorm, improve your craft, or learn something new. Remember, every successful business had days when no one showed up.
Slow Business? Here’s Why You Shouldn't Panic
Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither is your empire. Business ebbs and flows, and even if it feels like you’re moving at a snail’s pace, progress is still progress.
Here’s a tip: instead of focusing on what’s not happening, focus on what you can control. Maybe your business is slow this week, but next week could be your breakthrough. Keep the faith, and don’t forget to celebrate small wins. They add up!
