Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site: A Trip Through Time with a Twist of Humor

Updated: Oct 31

Ready for a time-traveling adventure with a twist? Buckle up as we dive into the past at Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site, a gem of American Revolution history, stunning Hudson River views, and, yes, some surprises! Located along New York’s Hudson River, this scenic yet eerie site lets you walk in the footsteps of revolutionary soldiers, explore historic landmarks, and learn about the daring night raid that helped change the course of the war. Just a heads-up: while it’s welcoming to people, this historical spot is strictly no-pets-allowed, so leave your furry friends at home this time.

Getting There

For Rockland County residents, Stony Point Battlefield is wonderfully close! Situated in the town of Stony Point, the site is accessible via Route 9W, just a quick drive north from the center of Rockland. You’ll find ample free parking on-site, so you can easily stop by and start exploring without any hassle.

If you’re visiting from farther afield, like Manhattan, the site is about an hour and a half’s drive north. The route offers beautiful Hudson Valley scenery, making it a peaceful drive out of the city.

Historic Background: The Story Behind Stony Point

Let's set the stage: it's July 16, 1779. The American Revolution is in full swing, and British forces occupy Stony Point, a rocky promontory with a fort overlooking the Hudson. General George Washington decides it’s time to make a bold move. Enter the hero of our tale, General "Mad" Anthony Wayne, known for his fearless tactics and “let’s just go for it” spirit. Washington gives him the green light for a surprise raid.

Under the cover of night, Wayne and his troops march silently towards the fort. They cross the Hudson, trudge through swamps, dodge British sentries (probably questioning their life choices), and launch a bayonet-only attack (yes, no firing allowed!). Imagine the surprise of the British soldiers, barely awake and suddenly surrounded by determined rebels! Within a swift 25 minutes, the Americans capture the fort, and the British never get it back. Mission accomplished!

Exploring the Battlefield

As you wander the grounds, you’ll find markers and plaques detailing this thrilling attack. Bring some sturdy shoes because the terrain is rocky, just like the soldiers faced back in 1779 (minus the surprise attacks). There’s even a museum on-site that has parts of uniforms, weapons, and artifacts that really bring this story to life. Think of it as the ultimate history class field trip with real-life props.

Amenities and Access

  • Hours: The site is open Wed-Sat 9:00-5:00 and Sunday 12:00-5:00pm. Museum hours may change.

  • Admission Fee: Admission to the grounds is free, so it’s a budget-friendly trip!

  • Restrooms: There are restrooms near the museum. Basic but clean.

  • Food and Drink: There are no food vendors on-site, so pack a picnic or snack if you plan to make a day of it. There are some great picnic spots with scenic Hudson views that are worth the extra sandwich. We ate our snack packs on a bank with a beautiful Hudson River view right near Stony Point Lighthouse.

Trip Tips

·      Wear Good Shoes: Stony Point’s terrain is rocky and uneven, true to its name. So bring sturdy and comfortable footwear!

·      Bring Bug Spray: Hudson Valley mosquitos may want in on your history lesson, so come prepared.

·      Skip the Guided Tour: None are available here, but you can explore at your own pace. Signs along the way do a great job explaining the site’s history.

Final Thoughts

A visit to Stony Point Battlefield feels like stepping back in time. It’s a perfect mix of history, nature, and adventure. Whether you’re local to Rockland County or making the trip from the city, this site gives you a firsthand look at Revolutionary War bravery. And who knows, a little of General Wayne’s fearless spirit might just rub off on you!
