If you’re looking for a fun day trip along the Hudson, Stony Point Lighthouse is a quirky, historic spot with stunning views that’s worth every step. Nestled within the Stony Point Battlefield State Historic Site, this 19th-century lighthouse feels like a hidden gem right here in Rockland County.
First Things First: Getting to Stony Point
Whether you’re a local or just visiting, the journey to Stony Point Lighthouse is part of the adventure. For locals in Rockland County, it’s an easy drive. Just head north on Route 9W and follow the signs to the Battlefield State Historic Site. If you’re coming from further out, you can take the Palisades Parkway; it’s about an hour from New York City. However, if public transport is your plan, the closest option is to take a train to Haverstraw and then a cab, as there’s no direct service to the site itself.
Parking Tip: Parking is free, but the lot isn’t huge, so I’d recommend getting there early, especially on weekends. Have you ever parked in one of those lots where you’re pretty sure only ten cars will fit, but somehow, everyone squeezes in? It’s a bit like that!
The Lighthouse Trail (Or as I Like to Call It, the "Are We There Yet?" Path)
Once you’re in, the walk to the lighthouse is easy and scenic, with lots of river views along the way. We somehow took a detour (classic us), but the official path isn’t too challenging. Fun fact: it’s the oldest lighthouse on the Hudson, built in 1826 to guide ships up and down the river. Just knowing we were walking along trails that have been in use for centuries made it all feel a little extra special.
For pet lovers: Heads up! This site is pet-free, so Fido will need to stay home.
What You’ll Find (and Won’t Find) at the Site
When you finally reach the lighthouse, it’s like stepping back in time. This petite lighthouse packs a lot of charm, standing proudly against the river. You’ll want to spend some time soaking in the views and snapping photos. If the weather’s nice, it’s like a postcard come to life.
Now, as for amenities, here’s what you’ll want to know:
Entry Fee: Totally free! One of the best budget-friendly spots around.
Food and Drink: There’s no food or drink available on-site, so pack a picnic! Sonny and I brought snack packs and made a mini lunch out of it. We ended up on a bench overlooking the river, feeling like we’d won the lunch-spot lottery.
Hours: The site is open from 10 am to 5 pm on most days, but hours can vary seasonally, so it’s always good to check before you go.
Do you ever pack food for these day trips? If so, what’s your go-to picnic choice? I feel like I always bring the same things, so I’d love some inspiration.
Photo Ops and Final Thoughts
One of my favorite parts? The photo ops, of course! Standing against the river with the lighthouse in the background feels like something straight out of an old Hudson Valley painting. And it’s almost guaranteed to make your friends who didn’t come along jealous.
The entire Stony Point experience isn’t just about seeing the lighthouse; it’s about the journey, the views, and the quiet moments in nature. By the end, we felt like we’d had the perfect little getaway without having to travel far.
So, if you’ve been to Stony Point, what’s your take? Did you find any hidden spots, or have tips for future visitors? And if you haven’t, I hope this inspires you to give it a go. Let me know your tips or any funny travel stories. I’m all ears!
